和歌・茶道・書道・漢詩などの幅広い教養を備え、上級武士や文化人との知的な交流にも対応できる、まさに当時の総合芸術の担い手でありました。現代ではその艶やかな装いだけが独立して取り上げられることも多いですが、時代を超えてもなお「芯のある強い女性像」の象徴とされています。
